What is AVIF format?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format that uses AV1 compression technology. It can produce images up to 50% smaller than JPEG at the same quality level, and supports modern features like HDR, wide color gamut, and transparency. It's the most efficient image format widely supported today.
Will I lose quality converting PNG to AVIF?
AVIF uses lossy compression, so there is some quality loss. However, at high quality settings (80+), the difference is visually imperceptible for most images, including photos. AVIF's AV1 codec is significantly more efficient than JPEG, meaning you get smaller files at comparable quality. For line art or text-heavy graphics where every pixel must be preserved exactly, keep the original PNG.
Which browsers support AVIF?
